Welcome to Dor l’Door! Hebrew speakers will hopefully enjoy the word play in the name. For non-Hebrew speakers, “dor” means generation as in, from one generation to the following. It is a common Hebrew phrase meaning we pass along knowledge and customs from one generation to the next. We hope you feel when you acquire a one-of-a-kind, handmade mezuzah from Dor l’door, you will want to pass on your artwork as a family heirloom to your generations!

I am not a rabbi! Although I did play the part in Fiddler on the Roof… I grew up in a reformodox family. Mom came from Orthodox parents and dad came from ultra-reform German Jews who arrived in the US in the early 1800’s. In searching for my own Jewish identity, I attended university in Israel for two of my undergraduate years that happened to coincide with the Yom Kippur War (now you know how old I am). I have a strong connection with Israel and the Jewish people. I am “fairly” educated in Judaism and feel strongly about my heritage. For the most part, we live a virtuous life although not “shomer Shabbat”, ritualistically observant. Fortunately, the beautiful Jewish tent is large with malleable sides!

Having made this disclaimer, the mezuzahs I make are absolutely made with love and spirituality. Each unique one becomes a very special shelter for sacred texts. Like seeing a child leave home, a piece of me stays with each work of art.

May you have many years of health and happiness!

Gary
